One of the country’s best preserved medieval castles. Mary Queen of Scots stayed here when she was semi-imprisoned by Elizabeth 1.
From the moment of arrival at Bolton Castle, it is evident that this structure, aged over 600 years, bears the scars of civil war and other violent events. Despite this, three quarters of the walls remain intact, as do one third of the rooms which are sparsely decorated with furnishings and artefacts.
Imagine treading on the floorboards once walked upon by Mary Queen of Scots and visiting the rooms where she was incarcerated!
Research reveals that the structure was completed in 1399 for an expenditure of £12,000-a fortune in those days!
Over the last three decades a huge amount of restoration work has been completed which, with the aid of our personal tour guide will be brought vividly to your attention.
Following the tour a late lunch has been laid on at The White Bear, a hostelry located in nearby Masham.
